that has stayed with me in 2008. Roll on 2009!
1. Ólafur Arnald – 3055 [link]
A piece that continues to move me. Utterly, utterly beautiful. This
is classical music as it should be in the 21st Century. Although
released in 2007, the single came out in late 2008 – hence why it’s top
of my ‘08 chart.
2. Party Kisser (Bloc Party vs Kate Perry) – Divide & Kreate [link]
From the very first guilty pleasures. Really lifted the Kate Perry
song that everyone was on about to another level giving it a harder
edge.
3. Enter You – Wax Audio [link]
Metallica sold out when they made the bland Unforgiven video despite
Lars saying they would never commit such heresy. Following the great
big sell out they tried to reclaim their metalhead crown but have
failed and bored in equal measure. Wax shows where James would be
happiest – playing alongside Bryan Adams! And it beats anything from
Metallica since!
4. Suspicious Miracles – LeeDM101 [link]
Took mash-ups to another level. The simplicity of the mix stares you
in the face and then does a move you didn’t expect! The vocals are so
good this should have been the official release!
5. Back to Virginity - Phil RetroSpector [link]
Brought out the soul in Madonna more than Kabala.
6. Guns ‘n Roses – Street of Dreams/This I Love/Sorry [link]
It took me a while to get into Chinese Democracy but after a while
it lodged in my consciousness. A grandiose, overblown multi layered
rock fest. Three songs chosen because I haven’t quite made up my mind
which I prefer yet.
7. Bellaruche - Anything You Want (Not That) [link]
A damn fine R&B song that is rhythm ‘n blues.
8. Dunproofin’ - Electro Sandman [link]
My second ‘Sandman’ entry but so very different. A master at work.
9. Merka – Back Home (Merka’s Retrodub) [link]
In a way this tune is not complete. On first listen it left
something to be desired, but over time it filled that hole completely.
A top ten because it lived with me for so long and so well and I
absolutely love the bass drops.
10. Aggro1 – Linkin Park v. BT [link]
The best LP remix/mash I’ve heard, far better than anything with Jay
Z. I only wish Aggro1 would title his mashes cos it’s a mare having to
think of titles!
