Our good friend Rodion, that mischievious Italian disco ragazzo you might remember from MB Disco’s Italian Connection EP and our Giorgio Moroder Week with his rollicking take on master Moroder’s classic E=MC2, dropped us some news today.

This time he teamed up with Berlin-based ex-Captain Comatose member, Khan, and decided to re-visit the old Roman Bacchanalia – or at least to honour their spirit of wild, excessive alcohol and music infused orgies involving any willing citizen with no limits of class and age. So he thought of us…

Our good friend Martin Brodin, the MB Disco label boss, delivers a little season greeting in the guise of a perfect mix for groovy mistletoe exercises. “This is a mix I put together just for the fun of it. Nothing really new or groundbreaking. Just good music, at least in my ears. It’s a mix of smooth boogie, edits, balearic grooves, some dubby elements and true classic disco anthems. 2 hours and 37 minutes!! Happy xmas!”

For their Pioneer Sessions project, Levi’s asked a dozen musicians to cover a song by an artist who inspired them and each week they’re offering up a new track as a free download. I urge you to head over and have a look.

As for myself, I’m totally blown away by this wonderful cover by The Swell Season of Candi Staton’s classic 1976 disco hit “Young hearts run free”. If I didn’t know better, I’d say it was Cat Stevens in his heydays who was performing, and not The Swell Season. Easily in my top 10 this month.

Phonat – Learn to Recycle [MP3]

Phonat is Michele Balduzzi, a 7 foot Italian kid with Brian May style hair and a penchant for electro mayhem and pop rock bollox in equal measure, that has been taken under the wings of the Young Punx. Here’s what Hal Ritson of the Young Punx has to say about him:

“I first heard his music when we were running the (temporarily resting) Heavy Disco record label. He sent me demos. And every single one was absolutely awesome. Just the freshest electronic sounds I had ever heard. And the miracle was, he was recording them all on (just) a 5 year old laptop in a remote Italian farmhouse!

Several collaborations down the line it was clear that Phonat was a talent that needed fostering, so we moved him to London and gave him full access to our studio to let him come up with whatever he liked.

And he came up with this monster.”

Monster it is. It’s cheesy eighties meeting electro, hip-hop, house, drum’n'bass and what not. And it’s simply stunning. Perfect to start your weekend in style.
