I just came back from the Ableton User Group Budapest workshop
I made a presentation there about making mashups
and about mashup culture in general

yesterday I was planning my presentation
and I collected the five most important rules of making mashups
I posted them already on my private blog
but I think it’s a useful read here on APC too

TOP 5 rules of making mashups

#1 do NOT expect anything, ever
make it for fun and for free

#2 always create full song structure for your tracks
a good mashup is not a ‘Stars on 45’ type of megamix

#3 always use good quality sources
crap will always sound crap at the end of the process too

#4 go for the perfect flow, do not rape the original songs
the style clash is great,
but if the flow of your mix is perfect,
you can do wonders by using things from the same genre too

#5 always tag your mp3’s
don’t forget to credit your sources
and don’t forget to credit yourself either
feedback is the most important thing what you can get by making mashups

Electronic Musician has an interesting article penned by Dennis Miller that looks at 8 tools for turning photographs into audio and manipulating audio visually: Eerybody knows that a picture is worth a thousand words. But did you know that a picture can also buy you the frequencies of a thousand oscillators?

Using any of several modern music applications, you can convert the data that forms a picture on the computer screen into information that will generate an audio file. In most cases, the program uses the vertical position of each pixel of the image to control frequency and one or more color (RGB) values for parameters such as amplitude and stereo position.
