Illegal Sunday Mixtapes from London pirate stations in the 1980s

tapes

mastermix dot org focuses on the mid-1980s London soul radio stations which introduced the mastermix genre to the UK. The sounds are predominantly taken from FM pirate broadcasts, recorded to cassette. Often the recordings suffer from interference, drop outs, print-through and occasional ‘record button’ accidents. But generally they have a warm, authentic quality to them.

Monday Kick Pregnant women breakdancing in London

Monday Kick.
A happy, positive craziness which helps to start an another week.

Oxfam did this brilliant flashmob last fall in London. If you think this is dangerous, try giving birth in poor countries without a midwife, hospital or medicine. This flashmob is one of a series happening in Paris, Berlin, Utrecht and across Canada to highlight the scandal that millions of women in poor countries and around the world aren’t getting the healthcare they need for a safe and healthy pregnancy.

(And just to put your minds a rest – the dancing expectant mums in this video aren’t pregnant, they were professional dancers wearing pregnancy suits!)

Bergman – Ever Since

Bergman

Bleakness, tragedy and despair are probably a few of the things you might think of when you hear the name Bergman. But don’t let that colour your judgement when it comes to this Bergman. Apart from both being Swedes, I cannot really see that many common denominators between the famous Swedish director and the acclaimed nineties popsmith Mats Bergman, who now is planning his comeback.

The End Closing Video

TheEnd

The dedicated DJs and electronic music fans behind London’s The End put together this beautiful video tribute for their club, which will close forever this weekend (*sigh).

The End is (was) one of the world’s best dance music clubs, and its owners showed nothing but 100% love to quality electronic music (a rarity amongst club owners).

This 20-minute video features interviews with the club’s owners and the DJs behind what was one of the world’s greatest ever dancing holes.

Layo and Bushwacka!, Mr. C, Ben Watt and Andy C all say their poignant goodbyes. [via Beatportal]

Pink Floyd founding member Richard "Rick" Wright passed away today "after a short struggle with cancer," according to a statement posted on band’s website. He was 65. Wright served in early incarnations of the band and was a part of Pink
Floyd when the outfit first emerged under that moniker in 1965. He
primarily worked as a keyboardist, though he also contributed vocals
and has numerous songwriting credits on a number of Pink Floyd’s
records, including Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here.

The End has announced that the club will be closing those legendary metal doors for good in January 2009. The End & AKA will be closing in style, giving the venues the send off they deserve, and the chance for the different DJs and nights to say goodbye. They will be open as normal through autumn, with September, October and November’s parties rocking as usual. The farewell begins with The End’s 13th birthday on December 6th, with long-time favourite Sven Vath headlining. There will follow a series of closing parties featuring The End’s closest DJs and promoters, and then a grand closing weekend on January 23rd and 24th. Here is an interview with The End’s directors, Layo and Zoe Paskin   about the end of The End.
