The Pains of Being Pure at Heart – Come Saturday

The pains2

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart
Come Saturday [MP3]

Meet The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, a charming little energetic four piece noisy pop punk combo from Brooklyn, NY.

Their debut album is released this month and it's packed with highly infectious and  brilliant jangly, fuzzy, pop melodies, half of which remind me of Belle & Sebastian, Camera Obscura, and their likes – albeit with distorted guitars, and the other half of shoegazy indie stuff like, say, My Bloody Valentine. Heck, at times it even gives me a serious Ramones vibe.

Toy Toy – Fuck my boyfriend

London-based Toy Toy formed over a year ago with a self-proclaimed desire to stick two fingers up at the indie boy bands that didn’t have to sleep their way to the top…

Produced by Robert Harder (Whitey, Babyshambles), “ Fuck My Boyfriend” is their provocative and unapologetic debut single and is a dark tale of misguided relationships. Its punky sentiment and synth rocking choruses make up a slice of the finest crack-pipe pop. Nemesis to go describe them as “the long lost London cousins of The Rezillos”, which really hits the nail on the head.

As a special Valentine’s gift, they offer you a free download of “Fuck my boyfriend” on Feb 14. So make sure you visit their MySpace this Saturday (yes, you forgot?) and snag it. It’s huge. It’s brilliant. It’s the next big thing!!

Punk. No One is Innocent
a must see exhibition in Wien

Gudrungut

There is a great exhibition about the punk culture/style in Wien’s Kunsthalle. If you are in the are it’s really a must see. Here is what the organizers think about the event: Besides Hip Hop, Punk was the last global pop cultural movement that aimed to be more than just an acoustic
furnishing of teenager bedrooms: a complete upheaval in fashion, gestures of style, artistic forms of expression,
and music from the improve the world poses rampant in the sixties’ Summer of Love to the nihilism and no
future slogans of the Winter of Hate ten years after; from the soft and shapeless psychedelic color games to the
sharp contrasts and angular designs of the neon and plastic era. Punk was about an attitude of protest fuelled
by the spirit of the Situationist International, an extreme left wing group of European artists and intellectuals who
lived for “carrying gasoline to where there was fire”
(Guy Debord).

Make sure to visit the Kunsthalle’s site for more info and/or read the press release. Here are few picture to make you move.

Punk-loving robots pogo for science

Punkrobots

Despite the chaos and carnage of three nights of live punk at the Institute of Contemporary Arts punters would still be hard pressed to miss the three pogo-dancing robots in their midst. The machines, which have been created by a collaboration of artists and scientists, have been designed to fall in love with punk music and show their appreciation through dance.

The robot punks take pride of place in the mosh pit at a series of gigs called Neurotic.

Standing 2m tall, padded and dressed in leather, they are no ordinary concert goers.

Professor McOwan, from Queen Mary University, and one of the creators of the robots, said they were built because of his fascination with human-computer interaction. "I’m a computational neuroscientist and my interest is in trying to build mathematical and computational models for the way the brain processes sensory information, such as visual or auditory information. "I work out how human beings do that, build a computer model to test how it works and then hopefully, if it works well, you understand more about humans but also you have software for use in robotic systems.

"The idea is to look at the information processing strategies that have taken billions of years to develop through evolution, steal them and put them into computers."

The robots use neural networks, a collection of computer processors that function in a similar way to a simple animal brain.

Neural networks are popular in the field of artificial intelligence because of their ability to recognise patterns from the sensory input of external sources, much like a human brain.

The robots have been trained to like punk, explained Professor McOwan.  [read more and watch the video @ BBC NEWS]

BM LINX sign record deal, set to release “Black Entertainment” this Fall…

Bmlinx

BM LINX: Understanding Orange [mp3]

It’s not everyday that an underground NYC band is branded with the stamp of approval by rock zealots such as Alan Moulder but BM LINX, with their infectious style of beat-driven electro rock, have managed to do just that and much more.  The famed British alternative rock record producer discovered BM LINX while passing through NYC and immediately fell in love with the glittery and lacquered-up myriad of rhythmic sounds that drive audiences to sway their hips and tap their feet right up until the very last strum of frontman Tony Diodore’s guitar.  Moulder, after working with a veritable who’s who of famed artists such as Nine Inch Nails, The Smashing Pumpkins, and Depeche Mode (just to name a few), decided to take on BM LINX as a mixing project in his London studio.  The results are nothing short of stellar.
