J Dilla – Donut Shop [preorder Stones Throw]

Serato and Stones Throw have teamed with the J Dilla Estate for the official J Dilla Serato release, Donut Shop. This is 2 discs with six J Dilla tracks, 2 sides with Serato Control Tone (for use with Serato Scratch Live DJ software), and 2 donut slipmats in a package designed by Studio No.1. This will be out on May 10th.

I think this is one of the smartest releases this year. Here is a teaser track to make you move.

Ableton and Serato present The Bridge

Ableton and Serato present The Bridge—the first result of the partnership announced in October 2008.

The Bridge spans the gap between music production and DJing, creating a natural link between Ableton Live and Serato Scratch Live or ITCH. The Bridge provides a powerful fusion of DJ and production tools, opening a world of opportunities for DJing, remixing and live performance.

You can cross the Bridge in either direction:

Ableton to Serato
The Bridge provides Ableton Transport Control (ATC), giving you turntable-style control of your own multitrack productions. Simply drag an Ableton Live Set to a deck in Scratch Live or ITCH and use your turntables, CDJ or ITCH controller to control the transport.

Serato to Ableton
The Bridge provides the ultimate mixtape creation tool. DJs can perform mixes in Serato Scratch Live or ITCH and save them as an Ableton Live Set. This way, the DJ can still perform the mix—better than cut and pasting it together in a DAW—but also has detailed editing options.

The Bridge is free for anyone who owns both:

- A registered version of Serato Scratch Live or ITCH hardware and
- Ableton Live 8 or Suite 8

Serato and Ableton are happy to announce a partnership which will pave
the way for the future of Digital DJing. With shared artist rosters
from hip-hop (DJ Jazzy Jeff, DJ Nu-Mark, A-Trak) to electronica (Paul
Van Dyk, DJ Sasha), both Ableton Live and Serato Scratch Live are
renowned as the premier performance platforms in clubs around the
globe. While Serato’s Scratch Live excels in vinyl emulation, music
library control and lightning quick hands-on scratching, Ableton Live

Laptops go live by Sasha Frere-Jones The New Yorker about laptop mixing

Last December, a friend and I went to a release party for Mary J. Blige’s “Growing Pains” album. Near huge screens showing Blige videos, a d.j. was playing records on two turntables. The d.j.’s eyes, however, were trained on an Apple MacBook on a shelf above them. As a succession of Blige songs faded from one into the next, the d.j. never changed the records. My friend asked, “Is there a new Mary medley I don’t know about?”

The answer was no. The d.j., like many today, was using a program called Serato Scratch Live, which uses a turntable as a knob or a switch. Signals from a special Serato record being manipulated are fed into a box connected to a laptop. Serato translates the resulting signals, allowing the d.j. to cue and cross-fade digital audio files with the turntables. Why use a turntable at all? It’s still an efficient, familiar interface that, for blending songs, works better than a mouse. It’s also a visual indication that the d.j. is doing something with, and to, the music being heard.
