Looking back at the noughties, The Guardian’s Dorian Lynskey examines how a mashup (A Stroke of Genius by Freelance Hellraiser) that never got a legitimate release prefigured all the significant pop trends of the decade.

We can’t agree more, call it as you want: bootleg, bastard pop,  cut and paste music, mashup, unofficial remixes; but the IY remix culture was the most important thing in the first decade of the new millenium. Freelance Hellraiser’s mashup is one of the shinniest diamonds of our scene, inspired many many producers to start to make mashups like this and even ater all these years it sounds fresh and brill.

Like Dorian says: – Looking back, it feels like digital music was the genie in the bottle and, now that it’s been let out, nobody can put it back in. -

Ok, I admit it. I was wrong. There IS a future for The Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas. Most likely a rather bright one too. Which probably means there is a future for The Strokes as well. At least according to this interview in the Guardian, which claims there’s a new album on the way

Here’s the rather tasty little teaser to Casablancas’ upcoming solo album Phrazes for the Young that’s released next Tuesday, 11th Dimension. Not at all what I expected. Not at all bad.
