So, let’s have a chat with MB DISCO label boss, Martin Brodin, also the founder of Deeplay Music. With this label he wanted to go back to his Disco roots. Disco Music has always been in Martin’s blood and some 18 months ago he felt it was time to pay tribute to it. So how has he done it? The answer is very simple, mix up the old disco feeling with modern sound. Call it Nu-Disco, Post-Disco, Disco for 2010s or whatever you see fit, for Martin it’s just about the feeling for what he believes is Disco.
- The Italian Connection – tell us, how did you come up with the idea?
It all started with Michael Suiter, one part of L.I.S. sent me a remix they done of E=MC2 some time ago. I simply fell in love with it and one thing lead to the other. His friend in Italy Gianluca Pandullo (I-Robots), is well connected to all the old disco heads there so he started to check if they’re interested in participating in the project. Said and done, everyone jumped on it. So initially we called it the Italian Connection as a project name, but we liked it so much so it became the official name for it.
Check out the rest of the interview – after the jump!
- How’s the feedback been so far?
It’s been amazing to be honest. Everyone who heard about the project is surprised and filled with excitement. After all, it’s an official release and not a cheesy bootleg or so. Early feedback from Dj’s tells me that I was right about this project, it’s simply one of a kind.
- And what about the producers? What was their reaction?
They were super thrilled. Giorgo is a legend in Italy amongst the electronic scene so it was not really hard to convince them to do the remixes. And I believe they treated the original with great respect. They all stayed true to the original without messing around too much.
- As for yourself, you did a re-work of another of Moroder’s numerous classics, The Chase? How did that happen?
Well, I have the connection to the Moroder back catalogue in some way, and this track is of course one of his greatest when you think about underground club music. I always had the original in my box when I DJ:d, so it just felt natural to touch it a bit :-)
- How was it received?
Most of the Dj’s and tastemakers preferred the Dub Mix. And I can understand why, it’s a bit more dubbed out and a little bit different from the original remix I did, which is more of a one-to-one cover.
- When did you first get in touch with a Moroder production?
Well, without knowing it was Giorgio who was behind it, I would say it was Irene Cara’s Flashdance, What A Feeling back in 1983, which he produced. I was 12 years old then. But the track that really got me into his sound was when I for the first time heard Donna Summer’s I Feel Love. Must have been at a school disco or so. A true master piece.
- What’s your favorite Moroder song?
Definitely I Feel Love with Donna Summer, the energy and coolness is a rare combination. This track is the ultimate dance track, period. Check out the 15 minute long Patrick Cowley remix!!
- Which other Moroder song would you give your right arm to remix?
I guess Evolution would be the next if I get the chance to dig into it.
- Any more Moroder projects coming up?
I’m sure there will be. I’m planning a few things. So stay tuned to mine and MB Disco’s Facebook and you won’t miss it.
- So what else is cooking at MB Disco? What – or rather who – should we keep an eye on in the near future?
We have a few secret things lined up that I can’t reveal just yet, we want to be a bit mysterious. Naa, not really, but some projects need green light
first. All I can say it’s big projects with more legendary people involved so it needs to be done properly. The ones I can mention are tracks from label boss Martin Brodin and Copycat, a new great talent from Sweden. Which will come early 2012. We’re also planning a second volume of Swedish Disco Society where we highlight the best of the best from the Swedish Disco scene, obviously!
- So, Moroder’s done. Any other dream project for MB Disco?
I would love to work with Yello some way or the other. They used to be my heroes when I was a kid. The ultimate would be doing a new collaboration or reworking some of their classics. Imagine a Nu-disco touch of Bostich :-)
Thank you very much, Martin – and good luck! With both the Italian Connection and MB Disco. Keep us in the loop, will you!
