Remember The Sounds? A few years back they charmed both sides of the pond with their ultra catchy punky spunky pop. Now they’re back. With a bit darker and more mature sound. And a twist of electro…

They’re much better off this way, if you ask me. Well done. While we’re at it, check out their new album, Something to die for (what’s with all the death references all of a sudden…) – out now.

Erik Hassle - Are you leaving [stream]

Apparently Swedish up and coming star Erik Hassle listened to and was inspired by the Swedish Boot Mafia remixes and decided to take the electro path on his new EP – on which he collaborates with Swedish mega-popular band Kent, btw. This is HOT, kitties. Scout’s honour!

You might remember our infatuation with Kid Kasio‘s Not for turning a while back. It even made it to my personal APC Top 20 of 2010 (#14).

We’re happy to share his new tune and video, The Reason – a pitch-perfect rendition of the best of the eighties. Think 1983, and Break Machine hooking up with Robert Smith – on happy pills… Sort of.

Cassius – Brotherhood [stream]

Cassius is back. This week sees the release of their new EP, titled The Rawkers on – wait for it – Ed Banger Records. Embracing a slightly retro and old school electro approach, the EP’s full of surprises and one or two exquisite little gems.

The first single is “I Love You So”. But to be quite honest, I doesn’t really do it for me. Not yet. I’ll have a closer look at the remixes and get back to you. BUT. The rest of the stuff is dead cool. So, here’s another little teaser for you instead – the opening track “Brotherhood”. Much more in line with the standards I expect from messieurs Zdar and Boom Bass.

I don’t know much about this guy. But here’s the lowdown. 1) He hammers out some serious electro bangers. 2) He’s from Sweden. 3) He’s sixteen years old.

Let me repeat that: He’s sixteen years old…

Scotty Dynamo – Make it right [MP3]

Here’s our last installment in our little Canadian hip hop/rap exposé, but certainly not the least. I kinda saved the best for last…

Scotty Dynamo is a 19 year old producer, rapper AND actor from Toronto, Canada. His style is actually not that far from The Girls Can Hear Us. In fact, when I heard him first, I thought it was a new track from the Ontario boys. Luckily, it wasn’t. So I got another set of songs to fall in love with.

Scotty also combines electronic dance floor friendly beats, with witty and poignant lyrics. But maybe even more so. Most of his tunes are full of analogue goodness. Some of them will make you wonder whether you’ve been teleported back to the 80s. On the other hand, his style sounds so very much “today” that you cannot help thinking that surely this must be the perfect soundtrack to the late noughties…

Despite his age, Scotty’s been around a while and has managed to secure a pretty decent online following and fan base. He has released his first EP (check iTunes or Amazon) – and I’m pretty sure we’ll hear from him again. Soon.

Phonat – Learn to Recycle [MP3]

Phonat is Michele Balduzzi, a 7 foot Italian kid with Brian May style hair and a penchant for electro mayhem and pop rock bollox in equal measure, that has been taken under the wings of the Young Punx. Here’s what Hal Ritson of the Young Punx has to say about him:

“I first heard his music when we were running the (temporarily resting) Heavy Disco record label. He sent me demos. And every single one was absolutely awesome. Just the freshest electronic sounds I had ever heard. And the miracle was, he was recording them all on (just) a 5 year old laptop in a remote Italian farmhouse!

Several collaborations down the line it was clear that Phonat was a talent that needed fostering, so we moved him to London and gave him full access to our studio to let him come up with whatever he liked.

And he came up with this monster.”

Monster it is. It’s cheesy eighties meeting electro, hip-hop, house, drum’n'bass and what not. And it’s simply stunning. Perfect to start your weekend in style.

APC friend and leading Argentinian cumbia producer The Peronists sent us his latest tune to share it with you. The man behind the 8bit Super Mario cover Mario Cumbia, goes dancehall flavoured electro this time.
